Best Sapper Competition History

The Best Sapper Competition began in 2005 as a means for service members to showcase the U.S. Army's elite Soldiers serving in combat engineering military occupation specialties.

The three-day competition is open for two person teams of Army or Marine Engineer MOS competitors in the grades of E4 and above. From 2005 to 2017 the competition required that teams consist of at least one member who is a graduate of Sapper Leader Course. In 2018, the competition requirements changed to require that both team members be graduates of Sapper Leader Course. Any unit desiring an exception to the established eligibility must submit exceptions through the United States Army Engineer School Commandant.

The competition has been conducted ever year since 2005 except for 2013 and 2014 due to Government Furlough.

The competition's concept is to not only determine the next "Best Sapper" team, but to challenge and test the service members' knowledge, physical prowess and mental fortitude. The Best Sapper Competition is held on Fort Leonard Wood and is open to the public. For more information email: usarmy.leonardwood.engineer-schl.mbx.best-sapper@mail.mil.
