Command Sgt. Maj. Larry H. Orvis Jr. completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort McClellan, Alabama, where he trained for Military Occupational Specialty 31B, Military Policeman.

Orvis’ previous assignments were with the 630th Military Police Company, Bamberg, Germany; Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 793d Military Police Battalion, Bamberg, Germany; Law Enforcement Command, Fort Sill, Oklahoma; 40th Military Police Detachment, Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Alpha Battery, 1st Battalion, 22nd Field Artillery Regiment, Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Alpha Company, 701st Military Police Battalion, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; 463rd Military Police Company, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; Early Entry Command Post, Fort Richardson, Alaska; 164th Military Police Company, 793d Military Police Battalion, Fort Richardson, Alaska; 759th Military Police Battalion, Fort Carson, Colorado; 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, Fort Riley, KS; and most recently as the Command Sergeant Major for the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, KS.

He has held positions of Military Police Patrolman, Gunner, Driver, Team Leader, Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Drill Sergeant, Senior Instructor/Writer, Operations Sergeant, First Sergeant, Operations Sergeant Major, Battalion Command Sergeant Major, and Brigade Command Sergeant Major.

Orvis has deployed in support of Operation Joint Endeavor, twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and in support of Operation Spartan Shield.

His military education and schooling includes Basic Combat Training, Advanced Individual Training, Warrior Leader Course, Advanced Leader Course, Senior Leader Course, Drill Sergeant School Course, First Sergeants Course, Sergeants Major Course (Class 61), CSM Force Management Course, Battalion and Brigade Pre Command Course, Battalion and Brigade CSM Development Course, BSTB Pre Command Course, Antiterrorism Program Manager’s Course, Antiterrorism Unit Advisor’s Course, Conventional Physical Security Course, Instructor Training Course, Small Group Leader Development Course, Combat Lifesaver’s Course, Cold Weather Orientation Course, Basic Combatives Course, and the Senior Enlisted Joint Professional Military Education Course.

His civilian education includes an associate’s degree from the University of Maryland University College and a bachelor’s degree from Excelsior College.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (6), Army Commendation Medal (2), Army Achievement Medal (7), Military Outstanding Volunteer Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation (2), Army Superior Unit Award, and the Drill Sergeant Identification Badge.

Orvis is a member of the prestigious Sergeant Audie Murphy Club and is a recipient of the Order of the Marechaussee Award. He is also a recipient of the Order of Saint Barbara, the Order of Saint Maurice, and a Noble Patron of Armor.

Comprehensive Soldier Fitness (CSF) was established on 1 October 2008, as a Directorate in the Army G-3/5/7. The mission of this program is to develop and institute a holistic fitness program for Soldiers, families, and Army civilians in order to enhance performance and build resilience.
