58th Transportation Battalion Commander's Biography

58th Transportation CommanderLieutenant Colonel (LTC) Matthew Western is a native of Montana where he served in the Army National Guard as an Infantryman (11B/11M) and Cavalry Scout (19D) from 1995 to 1999. He received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Transportation Corps through the ROTC program at Montana State University in 1999.

LTC Western’s initial assignment was at Fort Riley where he served as a Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer in the 24th Transportation Company. On his next assignment, he served as the Brigade Plans Officer in the 172nd Infantry Brigade, Fort Wainwright, Alaska. During this time, he deployed to Kuwait and Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

LTC Western then commanded the National Training Center Movement Control Company, Fort Irwin, California for 31 months. During this time, he deployed the unit to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following company command, he served as the 5th AR BDE S4 OIC at Fort Carson, Colorado. After this assignment, LTC Western worked at Human Resources Command (HRC) in Alexandria, Virginia from 2008 to 2010.

After completion of the College of Naval Command and Staff at the Naval War College, LTC Western served as the Executive Officer for the 204th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. During this time, he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. LTC Western then served as the Support Operations OIC for the 2nd Brigade Combat Team at Fort Carson, Colorado. Following this assignment, LTC Western served as the Support Operations OIC for the 43rd Sustainment Brigade at Fort Carson, Colorado.

Following his time at Fort Carson, LTC Western was sent to the Army Logistics University, Fort Lee, Virginia where he served as the Chairman of the Basic Officer Leader Department responsible for training 1900 Transportation, Ordnance, and Quartermaster lieutenants each year.

LTC Western is a graduate of the Transportation Officer Basic Course, the Combined Logistics Captains Career Course, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, and the College of Naval Command and Staff. His civilian education includes a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Montana State University and a master’s degree in Strategy and Policy from the Naval War College.

LTC Western’s decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (2 awards), Meritorious Service Medal (4 awards), the Army Commendation Medal (5 awards), the Army Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Badge, and the Parachutist Badge.
