Welcome to the
Chemical Basic Officer Leader's Course
(CBOLC)
How to Use this Web Site
There is
enormous amount information available to new
students, only some of which is listed here.
You will notice that there are several document
listed under “Mandatory Reading”. All students
are expected to read this information prior to
arriving at Fort Leonard Wood.
A Message from the Commander
As Commander of
Alpha Company, I would like to welcome you to
aboard. You will soon become part of a proud
battalion with battle honors and a lineage
dating back to World War I. Today, we train and
provide command and control for all Chemical
Corps and international military professionals
attending Chemical Officer Basic Course (CBOLC),
Chemical Captains Career Course (CMC3). This
site provides information necessary to
successfully arrive and in-process the 84th
Chemical Battalion and Fort Leonard Wood.
CBOLC is an
intense 13-week program that will challenge you
physically and mentally. The course provides all
newly commissioned chemical officers with the
technical and tactical knowledge and skills that
are essential to succeed as a Platoon Leader and
a Staff Officer.
Upon arrival at
Fort Leonard Wood, you should follow the
reporting procedures outlined in this welcome
packet. During this period, you will receive an
in-depth orientation to the unit and process
most administrative actions related to
in-processing. Small Group Instructors (SGI)
assigned to train your class will lead you
through inprocessing.
Come prepared
to learn. Your BOLC I and II location provided you
with great training to prepare you to be an
effective Army officer. Here, a dedicated and
professional staff will train and motivate you
to be knowledgeable, disciplined, and physically
fit Chemical Platoon Leaders regardless of your
component or specific follow-on assignment.
Listed below is some guidance to prepare you
prior to signing in here at Fort Leonard Wood
and tips for success at CBOLC:
a. Be
physically fit. Officers, are expected to be
extremely physically fit, and are expected to
meet Army height and weight standards in
accordance with Army Regulation 600-9. Upon
arrival at CBOLC you will be weighed and taped.
Do not allow yourself to exceed the allowable
standards. Failure to meet the standard will
result an unfavorable administrative action that
will be reflected on your permanent Academic
Evaluation Report (AER) at the end of the
course. The cadre will administer an Army
Physical Fitness Test (APFT) within your first
week of arrival and a second APFT at the end of
the course. I recommend that you begin training
for these events before you arrive through a
routine of push-up and sit-up improvement as
well as running. For further guidance and
suggested training see FM 21-20 on the Army
Digital Library.
b. Be prepared
for a challenging academic course load. CBOLC is
an intensive course. Decontamination, Smoke
Operations, HAZMAT, Tactical Radiation,
Radiological Operations, Biological Warfare
Agents and Reconnaissance Operations are just a
few of the areas that CBRN officers are expected
to be proficient in.
Learn all that
you possibly can to prepare yourself for your
next job. The team here will aid in learning,
but rest assured that you will only get out of
the course what you put into it. Remember, your
future Soldiers expect you to come to them
prepared to take charge. Take this
responsibility seriously. I look forward to
meeting you and your family.
About Fort Leonard Wood
Fort Leonard
Wood was established in 1940 as a basic training
center. Since then, this installation has
launched the military careers of over three
million men and women. Fort Leonard Wood
occupies about 63,000 acres, and is located in
south-central Missouri near the cities of
Waynesville and Saint Robert. It is about 140
miles west of St. Louis and 90 miles northeast
of Springfield. The nearest cities with
populations greater than 10,000 are Rolla (23
miles) and Lebanon (30 miles). On 1 October
1999, Fort Leonard Wood became the home of the
Maneuver Support Center, including the U. S.
Army Chemical, Engineer and Military Police
schools.
Students
arriving by air should be ticketed to Forney
Airfield, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri (airport
code: TBN). If a flight to Fort Leonard Wood is
not available, an alternative is Greyhound Bus
Lines, which operates from the bus station in
St. Louis Lambert International Airport, and
arrives at the bus station in St. Robert – three
blocks from the main gate of Fort Leonard Wood.
Students arriving after duty
hours/weekend/holiday should call (573) 596-0805
which is the 3rd Chemical Brigade Staff Duty
Office.
Directions
Interstate
I-44 runs across the width of southern Missouri
from Saint Louis in the east to Springfield in
the west, and is the main thoroughfare you will
take to get here. The Fort Leonard Wood main
gate is located on I-44 at Exit 161, in Saint
Robert. After taking exit 161, head south on
Missouri Avenue approximately 2 miles. Missouri
Avenue will take you through the FLW main gate.

installation from the right.

Reporting Procedures
Upon your
arrival at Fort Leonard Wood, go to Building 470
and check into the lodging office [(573)
329-3704]. (Bldg 470 is located across from
Burger King/Churchs Chicken on Missouri Ave.)
Inform them you are here for CBOLC Class ##
(they will need a copy of your orders). Ensure
the lodging office issues you a reflective road
guard vest. After you get your room & address,
stop by the Post Office (located behind the PX
in Building Number 498) and fill out a “Change
in Mailing Address Card” so that your mail can
be forwarded to your address at Fort Leonard
Wood.
After you check
into lodging, during duty hours report to
MANSCEN, Thurman Hall, Room 1011/1811. If you show up the day
your class starts report to MANSCEN bldg at 0430
in front of the cannons. Make sure you report
in Army Combat Uniform (ACUs) with the correct
patches on (NG or Reserve will wear their Unit
patch or follow-on Unit patch, Active Duty will
wear the 3rd Chemical BDE patch only. 2LT/1LT rank, name tape,
black beret). We will start in-processing you
then. After duty hours or on weekends, report
to the BDE HQ staff duty officer (SDO) and
sign-in. Report to the orderly room at 0800 the
next duty day.
Bring all of
your paperwork, orders, medical records (memo
for exception to policy on carrying own medical
records),
and dental records, leave form, and shot records
with you (hand-carry, don’t trust someone to
mail them to you, and bring originals, no
copies).Unit will not release your medical and
dental records, have your unit mail them to:
COMMANDER
A Co, 84th
CM BN, 3d CM BDE
Fort Leonard
Wood, Missouri 65473
During
in-processing, you will form at the North side
of MANSCEN at the cannons at 0415. The uniform
will be Army Combat Uniform (ACUs), with black
beret. Depending on the time of the year, gortex
and black leather gloves. At this time you will
meet your Small Group Instructors (SGI). They
will conduct roll call from the latest ATTRs
roster. At 0530, the operations sergeant will
conduct in-processing. The SGIs will brief you
on your upcoming 13 weeks at CBOLC and lay down
ground rules for you. Bring all of your
paperwork, orders (20 copies should suffice,
regardless of what others have told you), and
medical records, dental records, leave form,
shot records, DA Form 1610 and 201(ERB file).
Married active-duty
students who are TDY en-route are welcomed to
bring their spouses to Fort Leonard Wood. Within
each CBOLC class, there are usually 5-8 (out of
50) officers who bring their spouses. There are,
however, two drawbacks to bringing your spouse
with you - geographical and financial. CBOLC
students who are here alone (single or married)
are provided billeting (hotel-style rooms) on
post for free. Students are usually lodged in
the same vicinity on post as their peers.
Married students who bring their spouses can
live in these Basic Officer Quarters at an out
of pocket cost of $5.00 for a total of 30 days
and then they will loose their basic housing
allowance. In order to keep that basic housing
allowance the preferred method is for the
student and spouse to get on post housing, which
is available, or find and apartment off post. If
provided on-post housing, there is no cost for
housing or for your basic utilities. American
Eagle has several furnished apartments available
as well as 2-3 bedroom duplexes. Essentially,
you will not receive BAH, or claim any
additional housing expenses on TDY claims. You
will still be able to receive all other TDY
payments. You will also receive a monthly
subsistence amount (BAS – roughly $184 each
month). To live on post, we must submit a
request for an exception to policy to the
director of housing. We would be more than happy
to submit this request for you. Please contact
us before you arrive so we can submit the
request early.
Moving your household
goods? Your orders should authorize a partial
DITY move from your home of record to BOLC2 and
from BOLC2 to CBOLC. Call Fort Leonard Wood
transportation office at 573-596-0077 to answer
specific questions.
Dependents arriving at Fort
Leonard Wood while their sponsor (spouse) is
still at BOLCII must have the following
documentation:
-
Power of Attorney
(for rental agreement)
-
Copy of Sponsor's PCS
Orders
-
Dependent ID Card or
Valid Picture ID
-
Signed DEERS
Enrollment (DD1172), if Dependent ID card
has not been issued
-
2LT Inprocessing Checklist
Try to get a
government credit card before you come (National
Guard & Reserve, specifically). Active are not
able to apply for one at CBOLC because you’re on
TDY status. You will be given the option to
request one month's advance pay (Repayment can
be prorated over twelve months). While attending
the course, you will have the opportunity file
for accruals that will defray the lodging and
TDY expenses or you can submit you TDY voucher
upon arrival at your duty station.. If your
orders do NOT authorize you in and around
mileage you must contact the orders generating
authority (i.e. West Point, Cadet Command…) and
have them amend your orders. NG / Reserve
soldiers, you will not be able to get an advance
here. Receiving a Government travel card can
sometimes take several weeks.
Check your
orders. They may authorize you to report to
CBOLC early. If you have that opportunity, I
encourage you to come early. This will give you
time to take care of personal affairs and get
settled into lodging before the class starts,
which will make the first couple of weeks of
class much better for you! Remember, your orders
must state you are authorized to report early or
you will not be reimbursed for lodging here at
FLW. Students that report early to CBOLC may
have to stay off post until the weekend prior to
the start date. So be prepared to incur the cost
of lodging off post until the start of class.
Prices vary depending on the hotel. You will be
reimbursed for your expenses at the off post
per-diem rate. You are required to check in with
the post lodging office before you look for a
room.
Due to A
Company not having an arms room it is highly
discouraged for students to bring privately
owned weapons to the course. Exceptions will be
dealt with on a case-by-case basis by myself,
and must be resolved prior to the start
date of class. The Company Cdr
must get permission to store the weapon in
another unit’s arms room. However, no ammo is
allowed to be stored in the Arms Room (THERE ARE
NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS).
As of 1 Oct
2001, Fort Leonard Wood became a restricted
access post. You must have either a Pass or
permanent DOD sticker. Have your orders bringing
you to FT Leonard Wood on hand. When you arrive,
you will receive a day Pass from the front gate;
later, when you in process at Building 470 (2nd
Floor) you will sign for a temporary pass that
will cover you for the duration of the course.
In order to make the registration smooth make

ID Card. You will want to have
an ID card so that when you get here you can use
the PX and Commissary facilities. If you can’t
get an ID card before arrival we’ll make sure

your arrival. Remember, you can still get into
the PX / Commissary with a copy of your orders.

Class Functions
The
Commanding General hosts a combined mixer for
Chemical (CM), Engineer (EN) and Military Police
(MP) Career Course and Officer Basic students.
Spouses are encouraged to attend this function.
Each class celebrates military customs and
traditions by organizing a class formal, which
may be a dining-in or dining-out. Each class
will also organize and participate in a
community service project.
Like most
units, the 84th CM BN has an active Family
Readiness Group, and soldiers and their spouses
are strongly encouraged to participate. For
more information,
Alpha Company also hosts a Student Spouse Club,
which meets informally once each month. The
Student Spouse Club is specifically geared
toward supporting students and their spouses.
Follow-on Schools
Ranger
Training Program
The Ranger
training program is open to any male interested
in going to Ranger School. It demands more time
and commitment than average and therefore is not
for the lighthearted. There is additional
training during the week in the evenings, such
as classes on patrolling and knot tying, as well
as training on weekends like road marches, day
and night land navigation, and patrolling. The
standards here are stricter than Ranger school
to ensure that those who are sent have a better
chance of successfully completing the course.
Some qualifications for the program here require
everyone in the program to pass the Combat Water
Survival Test. You must be able to swim in ACU's.
Candidates for the slot must also run five miles
in 37:30 minutes or less. The standard at Ranger
school is 40 minutes. Other tests, such as
successfully completing a day and night land
navigation course and finishing a twelve mile
road march in less than three hours must also be
passed before a slot is awarded. Because Rangers
lead the way, they are expected to set the
standard for their classmates. They are held to
academic and professional standards that, if
they fail to meet, will disqualify them for a
slot. Ranger school is not for everyone and
there are some very qualified people who do not
compete for the slots. However, for those
interested, it involves intense training,
physical and mental toughness and a never quit
attitude. You will make close friends, get in
the best shape you've ever been in and have fun
while doing it, though. When all is said and
done and graduation time has come, the Ranger
candidates will go prepared to face the
challenges of one of the Army's toughest
schools. For more information on the Ranger
training program,
Airborne
School
Airborne school
is available upon completion of CBOLC. The slots
are very limited and usually given to those
individuals going to Ft. Bragg. For more
information on the Airborne
training program,
